Inventors of Computer Hardware

Inventors of Computer Hardware:

Fathers of Technology: 10 Men Who Invented and Innovated in Tech

IT would not be the same without the contributions of these pioneering men.
When people are asked to describe inventors, they often use one word: genius. As a society, we look upon the inventor with awe, and we fawn over his inventions with curiosity and admiration. We wonder, how did he do that? Where did he find his inspiration?
In the course of IT history, certain men have breathed life into groundbreaking technologies that most users now take for granted. In honor of Father’s Day, and as a companion piece to our 10 Mothers of Technology, we’ve compiled a list of 10 men who have helped shape IT with their inventions.
Here’s a toast to 10 fathers of technology.

Apple hires developer of World's Most Secure Messaging App

Developer behind world’s most secure messaging app joins Apple

Apple is serious this time to enhance its iPhone security that even it can not hack. To achieve this the company has hired one of the key developers of  Signal — World's most secure, open source and encrypted messaging app.
Frederic Jacobs, who worked to develop Signal, announced today that he is joining Apple this summer to work as an intern in its CoreOS security team.
"I'm delighted to announce that I accepted an offer to be working with the CoreOS security team at Apple this summer," Jacobs tweeted Thursday.

One of the iPhone-maker’s most recent hires, Frederic Jacobs, was previously a lead developer for Signal, which has earned a name as one of the most secure messaging apps available. It’s so good, it’s become a favorite of former NSA-contractor Edward Snowden who says he uses it everyday.
Apple has not commented on the recent hire, but Jacobs sent out a tweet on Thursday morning detailing his new post with Apple’s Core OS security team. The position is an internship but no details were given on how long Jacobs will be working in Cupertino.
Plans to make the iPhone security tougher than ever were supposedly underway even before the FBI’s demands that Apple unlock the San Bernardino terrorist’s iPhone. In an appearance on ABC’s World News Tonight Tim Cook stated that creating such a tool would be like the software version of cancer.
Jacobs spent the last two and a half years as a security engineer at Signal-creator, Open Whisper Systems, where he worked on the end-to-end encryption for the iOS app. What Jacobs’ new role at Apple will entail is under wraps, but he could be part of the team that implements a new backup strategy for iCloud authentication that would make it impossible even for Apple to decrypt.

Apple to build 'Unhackable' Services

The reason behind the Apple's hiring is quite clear as the company is currently fighting a US court order asking Apple to help the FBI unlock iPhone 5C of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook.

Basically, Apple is deliberately forced to create the special, backdoored version of iOS, so that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) may be able to Brute Force the passcode on Farook's iPhone without losing the data stored in it.

However, Apple CEO Tim Cook has already refused to provide such a backdoor into the iPhone that would degrade the privacy and security of all iPhone users.

If comply with the court order, the company would be flooded by the FBI and the CIA requests to unlock more iPhones of criminals in near future and the recent request made by the United States government to unlock 12 more iPhones would be just a starter.

But, in an effort to eliminate the chance for government and intelligence agencies for demanding backdoors, the company is removing its own ability to do that, for which they are hiring new interns in its core security team.

Apple found Jacobs a good fit for this, as he had spent two and half years with Open Whisper Systems, the company behind Signal, before leaving the company earlier this year.

Signal 2.0 Free Private Messenger App for Encrypted Calls and Texts

Aternative Messenger

Facebook and WhatsApp are closer together in the future and once again raise the question of how to deal in future with the user data. In terms of privacy and end-to-end encryption in this country has been threema outsell that is to have a safe Messenger on iTunes and Google Play Store for. Open Whisper Systems has now with version 2.0 its free Messenger signal for iOS expanded.

Signal Messenger App

An open source software group, Open Whisper Systems, has announced the release of Signal 2.0 — the second version of its free and open source messaging application for iPhone and iPad users.

Signal app is specifically designed to make secure and easy-to-use encrypted voice calling. But that’s what the application was providing in its previous release introduced last July with Signal 1.0.

Apple’s iMessage also provides encrypted communication, but it was challenged by security researchers in 2013, revealing that Apple controls the key infrastructure and could, in turn, be compelled to change a key anytime they want, and read the content of your messages.

But there was no way to send secure messages from an iPhone iMessage to an Android phone, or vice versa, unless you signed up for a monthly subscription plan and got the person you wanted to communicate with to sign up for it too.

GAME CHANGER: SIGNAL 2.0

Signal 2.0 lets you send end-to-end encrypted messages to users on different platforms for free.

Signal 2.0 allows users to send end-to-end encrypted group, text, picture, and video messages between Signal on iPhone and TextSecure on Android.

Open Whisper Systems is both a large community of volunteer Open Source contributors, as well as a small team of dedicated grant-funded developers. Together, we're working to advance the state of the art for secure communication, while simultaneously making it easy for everyone to use.
"We’re going to unify TextSecure and RedPhone into Signal on Android, release a desktop version of Signal, and keep working to push the envelope of secure protocols and private communication,"said Moxie Marlinspike, the founder of Open Whisper Systems on Monday.

Justice Department Wants Apple's Help Unlock 12 More iPhones

Earlier Creditek Posted  Apple CEO defies US court order to unlock iPhone
Just One Device? No, Government wants Apple to Unlock 12 More iPhones

Now Creditek  Posting One More Interest post i.e.,
Justice Department seeks to force Apple to unlock 12 more iPhones

Apple is fighting against a court order to unlock one iPhone for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). But according to the Wall Street Journal, the Department of Justice is currently pursuing court orders to force Apple Inc. excerpt data from “about a dozen” iPhones around the country.

It appears that when Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, announced that the Federal Government wanted Apple's help to design software that would compromise the security of all iPhones, he wasn't lying. According to Business Insider, the Feds want Apple to hep them crack phones involved in at least a dozen other cases.

Originally the FBI asked Apple to assist them in unlocking the phone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. Apple states that they complied within their means, but when they were asked to create iOS software that could bypass the phone's security, they backed off. Despite being ordered by a judge, Apple refused to create this software, in fear of it getting into the wrong hands and compromising the security of all iPhone users.

The justice department now wants Apple to aide in cracking phones involved in at least a dozen other cases. Apple is still refusing to threaten the security of their customers.

Many people have mixed beliefs on this matter. A survey conducted revealed that over half of the participants believe that Apple should assist the government in hacking the San Bernardino shooters' phone, despite the risks involved.

However, “in most cases, rather than challenge the orders in court, Apple simply deferred complying with them, without seeking appropriate judicial relief,” the prosecutors said.

For years, Apple has abided with these orders, say prosecutors. However, in late 2015, the company decided to step up its position on privacy and protecting user data, and began asserting that it should not be compelled to obey such government requests.

Apple has received overwhelming support from the vast majority of its users and peers in the technology industry, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter. In his interview to Bloomberg, Bill Gates too said that he does not back the FBI’s side of this particular case, and that the matter should be decided by the courts

Bill Gates wants Apple to Help the FBI

"Nobody's talking about a backdoor," Gates told Financial Times. "This is a specific case where the government is asking for access to information. They are not asking for some general thing, they are asking for a particular case."

Why Blind Topper Chose Stanford Over IIT

Today We are Sharing With you People An Inspirational Story Ever we had.

“A lot of people think that disabilities limits you from doing certain things. But I think success comes to those who believe in their strengths.” – Kartik Sawhney.

Kartik Sawhney

Kartik Sawhney is currently an undergraduate, studying his Bachelors in Computer Science at Stanford University. While he is among the several Indian students studying in the US, what sets him apart is that Kartik is blind. His impairment was seen as a disadvantage by the IITs of India. Stanford offered Kartik an opportunity to follow his passion – science. But this story is not about Stanford or the IITs. It’s about Kartik and his determination to overcome what are commonly considered as insurmountable hurdles.

Image: India Times

Kartik’s father owns a car accessory store in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi. His mother is a homemaker. He has a twin sister and an older brother. Kartik passed his class XII CBSE exams with a 95 per cent in a stream considered challenging by many – Science with Computer Science.

As a result of his visual impairment, Kartik had to wage his first war against the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which initially refused him a seat to study science in class XI. The board wasn’t convinced that Kartik would be able to handle the ‘visual inputs’ — graphs, diagrams, models, required for science. He had to write more than two dozen letters to the board and had an NGO campaign and his school negotiate for him before he was allowed to opt for science in class XI. “It was very difficult to convince the authorities to let me study science,” says Kartik. Once he got to study science, his school — Delhi Public School, R K Puram — found ways to help him. “For practicals, the teacher explained the apparatus and in the test, I got multiple choice questions based on the practical curriculum,” Kartik said, as reported by India Times.
“After class VIII, most blind are exempted from studying maths and science. They are offered subjects like music,” states George Abraham, CEO of Delhi’s Score Foundation. But Kartik was firm on pursuing the subjects of his choice – Science and Computers. Kartik scored 99 in Computer Science and 95 each in Mathematics, English, Physics and Chemistry. He scored 479 out of 500.
Kartik was hoping to complete his education in India. His next choice was Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). However, the IIT entrance exam doesn’t cater to blind candidates, making it impossible for Kartik to study Science and Engineering at one of India’s renowned institution.
“The journey was discouraging at times. But it’s satisfying to have gotten into Stanford, which has a support system for visually-challenged students,” said Kartik
Despite all odds, Kartik is now at Sanford and hopes to become a software developer and produce applications that are accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities. It’s time the Indian education system pull up it’s socks and fills glaring gaps before India loses many more ‘Kartiks’ to another country.

End Note: Achievements

At school Kartik was an exceptional student, winning laurels for the school in diverse events ranging from academic Olympiads to model UN conferences, music competitions to programming contests. Academically, Kartik emerged as the Class "topper" since class V. He was selected for the National Talent Search and the Junior Science Talent Search scholarships – two of the most prestigious scholarship programs in India. In recognition of his achievements, he was honoured with the National Child Award for Exceptional achievements which is the highest honour for children in India.
